Purpose of this guide

Quickstart guide: course design in times of GenAI

Generative AI is changing the way students learn, write, analyse, design, collaborate, and demonstrate their understanding. This raises important questions for teachers, course teams, programme teams, programme directors, and educational advisors.

To support these conversations, the Teaching and Learning Centre has developed two Quickstart guides:

Quickstart guide for teachers

This guide supports teachers and course teams in reflecting on the implications of GenAI for course design. It can be used when developing, revising, or evaluating a course.

The guide helps teachers consider:

  • course learning outcomes;
  • teaching and learning activities;
  • assessment design;
  • feedback and student guidance;
  • transparency about permitted and non-permitted GenAI use;
  • responsible and critical use of GenAI in learning.

The guide is intended as a practical starting point. It helps teachers make informed design choices that fit their course context, discipline, students, and learning goals.

Quickstart guide for programmes

This guide supports programme teams, programme directors, programme committees, and educational advisors in discussing GenAI at curriculum level.

The guide helps programme teams reflect on:

  • programme learning outcomes;
  • curriculum coherence;
  • learning lines and skills development;
  • assessment strategy across the programme;
  • student development over time;
  • responsible GenAI use in relation to disciplinary and professional expectations.

The programme guide can be used in curriculum conversations, programme redesign, education committee meetings, programme evaluations, or strategic discussions about the future of education.

How to use the guides

The guides are not intended as fixed rules or one-size-fits-all solutions. They are designed as structured conversation tools to support educational decision-making in a rapidly developing field.

Teachers and programme teams can use the guides independently or together with support from the Teaching and Learning Centre.
