Research units at Wageningen University are evaluated every six years in accordance with the Strategy Evaluation Protocol established by VSNU (UNL), NWO and KNAW.

This evaluates the quality of the research, its societal relevance, and the organization’s future viability. The self-defined goals and strategy of a research unit are guiding in this process.
The evaluation reports containing the findings and recommendations of the external peer review committees and the Executive Board’s response, as well as a summary and case studies from the research schools’ self-evaluation reports, are public.
In 2021, all research schools of Wageningen University were reviewed.

The next round of WU SEP assessments will take place in 2027, using the new version of the Strategy Evaluation Protocol (SEP 2027–2033). Instead of Research Schools, the five WU departments will be evaluated. In preparation for this SEP round, a review of the WU PhD programme and PhD policy was conducted in 2026 by an external peer review committee.
