Designing education with innovative technology (ICT)

1. How to integrate virtual exchange into your course

Would you like to enable students in your course to collaborate with peers from another country and learn from different cultures and perspectives? This can be achieved without physical mobility through Virtual Exchange (VE). In VE, students work together online on course-related tasks. They develop not only subject-specific knowledge, but also skills such as collaboration, digital communication, and intercultural understanding. VE offers all students access to an international learning experience, regardless of mobility constraints. In addition, it enriches course content by introducing alternative perspectives, for example on healthcare systems, behavioural issues, or mental health. In this MicroLab, you will work on integrating VE into your own course. You will explore didactical approaches, design a first outline, and exchange experiences with colleagues. This MicroLab was developed in collaboration with UNIC, a European university alliance.

Institution: Erasmus Universiteit
Location: Online Microlab
Dates and time: April 14

2. What do we mean when we talk about quality? Five dimensions of quality for educational videos

In this workshop, we will dive into the world of educational videos together and explore what really makes these videos of high quality. We start by exploring participants' views on what defines a good educational video. Using examples, we identify criteria of quality.

We then introduce a theoretical framework in which these criteria are conveniently grouped into five dimensions. The participants use this to do further assessment of their own videos using a checklist that includes these five dimensions.

During the joint discussion of the videos, the presenters will add an extra layer to the theoretical framework which may answer the question why people sometimes judge the same product very differently in terms of quality.

We will conclude the workshop with provocative questions that you will take home with you, so that afterwards you can reflect further on how to continue improving the quality of educational videos.

Institution: Open Universiteit
Location: Online self-study / On campus workshop
Dates and time: On request (duration: 90 minutes), starting from 6 registrations, we will contact participants to schedule a moment, participants should bring their own laptop

3. How to Make Educational Videos

In this training you will learn how you can present yourself in front of the laptop camera and the camera in the recording studio at TU/e. The aim is to get the most out of sending the information and keep your subject interesting and engaging for students. Where can you improve your (digital) presentation skills? What are you already doing well? What works for you and can you share with your colleagues? We are going to talk about physical posture, tone of voice, focus, tension in communication and all from behind your desk, at home. We will address questions that teachers have as a result of their experiences making educational videos.

Learning Outcomes
• To determine for what purpose you make your educational video.
• To present ront of the camera at home and in the studio setting.
• Make the subject of the video interesting and engaging for students, by making a script and use visual aids (e.g. PowerPoint slides)

3. The Inclusive Teacher: e-learning for teachers

The Inclusive Teacher e-learning course offers a range of tools and tips to make student diversity a valuable asset, leading to more effective teaching and greater student success.

As this course shows, inclusive teaching is often about making small, practical adjustments that lead to sustainable improvement. Topics include inclusive course design, pedagogy, group work, and assessment.

The e-learning is both accessible and interactive and offers a choice of activities. Through discussion boards, you can share best practices with other course participants.

Each course unit takes 2-3 hours to complete. If you do the Introduction and at least one other unit, you can get a Certificate of Participation. If you do all units and a reflective assignment at the end, you can gain a Proof of Competence.
