Frequently Asked Questions about the WUR laptop policy.
null
Why do I need a laptop as a student, and is this compulsory?
During computer practicals, using your own (Windows) laptop with an CANS/RSI prevention set (laptop stand, keyboard and mouse) is the standard. RSI stands for repetitive strain injury. The term suggests that complaints are always the result of repeatedly carrying out a certain activity or movement. Because this is often not the case, the term RSI has been replaced by the more common Dutch term CANS (complaints of the arm, neck and/or shoulder).
You will also take digital exams on your own laptop. A laptop is not formally mandatory for your degree programme, but it is essential.
Why has this ‘Study Anytime Anyplace’ policy been introduced?
Students increasingly use their own laptops during lectures to take notes and to access the WUR learning environment. In addition to the educational applications (Brightspace, Osiris), WUR also provides access via SAA (Study Anytime Anyplace) to the software needed for computer practicals, digital examinations and writing your thesis. This means you always have access to the software required for your courses, and you no longer need to search for an available PC on campus.
Wageningen University & Research has evolved from a traditionally on-campus oriented university into one where education can be followed worldwide in various (digital) formats. Studying and collaborating now take place both on and off campus; the SAA concept supports this flexibility. The policy was developed in close collaboration with the Student Council, and its implementation began in 2019 with the Council’s approval.
Why doesn’t WUR use fixed PCs with installed software?
Teaching spaces can now be used more flexibly because they no longer contain fixed PC setups. With an SAA policy, we can better facilitate education: students no longer need to share PCs, different teaching methods can be supported within the same room, and the furniture is height-adjustable and movable. Traditional PC rooms do not offer this level of flexibility.
Why should I buy a laptop through the WUR LaptopShop?
WUR collaborates with a supplier with whom we annually select an attractive laptop range. This allows you to benefit from favourable pricing and extensive support (such as the 1-hour laptop swap service). You buy directly from the supplier; WUR does not make any profit. In addition, WUR ensures that new software is tested on the laptops offered through the WUR programme, so you are best supported during your studies. Not purchasing a laptop via WUR has disadvantages: you will not have direct access to a loan laptop, and there is a higher risk that software may not work correctly on your device.
If my laptop is damaged at WUR, who is responsible?
As a student, you are responsible for your own laptop. If teachers cause damage to your property due to unsafe situations, defects or accidents (such as getting caught on cabling attached to a laptop), WUR will reimburse the damage. There is a maximum reimbursement for laptops: WUR will not pay more than the cost of the most expensive laptop sold through the WUR LaptopShop. Damage can be reported at the reception desks of Forum, Orion, Aurora, Leeuwenborch and Atlas. When reporting damage to your property caused by a teacher, the teacher must acknowledge responsibility.
