VLAG stimulates PhD candidates to organise group excursions to research facilities abroad or in the Netherlands. These excursions contribute to broadening PhD candidates’ horizons, both from scientific and organizational points of view.
The chair groups decide on aspects such as the destination of the PhD excursion, rules for participation of PhD candidates, finances, etc.
VLAG provides financial support for VLAG PhD candidates to participate in PhD excursions in the form of personal grants. Each eligible PhD candidate receives the VLAG grant at most twice during the PhD programme. This personal grant amounts to €50 per full working day with a scientific programme (travel time and sightseeing days do not count) with a maximum of € 400 per PhD candidate, per excursion lasting 8 full scientific days or more. This support is limited to PhD excursions within Europe*.
Eligibility: Training and Supervision Plan and PhD Research Proposal are approved in Hora Finita. For the PhD research proposal, this translates to: draft proposal submitted and reviewed, rebuttal and final version of the research proposal submitted, final approval by VLAG office registered in Hora Finita.
The PhD excursions are organised by a committee of PhD candidates. The motivation submitted by the PhD committee should include well-argued additional value of the excursion. Also, scientific staff members (thesis supervisors) are committed and are expected to accompany the PhD candidates.

* The tradition of organising PhD excursions by PhD candidates from most VLAG chair groups raised questions in relation to their environmental impact. In addition, inclusivity of the overseas PhD excursions was questioned as they are more expensive and often require participating PhD candidates to financially contribute. Moreover, arranging visas can be challenging and costly. Consequently, VLAG Board and VLAG PhD council decided to limit financial support from VLAG to PhD excursions within Europe only.
