Introduction
To make research data more FAIR, it is important to link to the underlying data in an article or report. By reserving a DOI for your dataset, you can refer to the data even if it is not yet published. A reserved DOI is not active and will not resolve; the data is not yet publicly available. A reserved DOI will not change and can be used in a publication to refer to the data; it will become active after the dataset is published.
How to reserve a DOI for my dataset?
It is possible to reserve a DOI for a dataset in the following repositories supported by WUR Library: 4TU.ResearchData, DANS Data Stations and Zenodo. You can reserve a DOI for your dataset in two ways:
1. Reserve a DOI yourself
a. Log in to the repository of choice (Repository Finder) with your WUR credentials.
b. Create a draft deposit.
4TU.ResearchData (more information)
- Add a recognisable (temporary) title and save the draft.
- In the metadata form, under ‘Linked resource & references’, you will find the reserved DOI.
DANS Data Stations: (more information)
- Fill in the mandatory metadata fields (these can be temporary values) and save the draft.
- Click your profile (top right) and go to ‘My data’.
- Select ‘unpublished’ datasets and select the created draft.
- The reserved DOI will be visible.
Zenodo: (more information)
- At ‘Do you already have a DOI for this upload?’, select ‘No, I need one’.
- Select ‘Get a DOI now!’
- The reserved DOI will be visible.
- Add a recognisable (temporary) title and save the draft.
c. You can use the reserved DOI in the publication to refer to the dataset. When the data is ready to be published, come back to the draft, complete the metadata, and publish the dataset.
2. Contact a Data Librarian to reserve a DOI
a. Send an email to data@wur.nl, indicating the repository of your choice (Repository finder).
b. WUR data librarians will reserve a DOI for you.
c. When the data is ready to be published, send the data to data@wur.nl. The dataset will be reviewed, after which improvements might be recommended.
d. The librarians will publish and register the data for you.
