The WUR section of Wageningen Campus is smoke-free since July 1, 2020. This is a result of a legal measure requiring educational institutions—from primary schools to universities of applied sciences/universities—to make their teaching areas completely smoke-free. Smoking is no longer permitted anywhere on the WUR campus, including the Aula and the Nergena and Droevendaal test sites. This applies to everyone: students, employees, visitors, and suppliers. There are no exceptions. This applies 24/7, year-round, and applies to all smoking and tobacco products (including e-cigarettes).

WUR wholeheartedly supports this measure because it values a healthy learning and working environment. Many young people start smoking when they begin their studies. By creating a smoke-free campus, WUR directly contributes to preventing students from starting to smoke and thus a Smoke-free generation (website Dutch only)

Frequently asked questions

Below you will find a list with frequently asked questions. Do you have other questions? Please contact the Servicedesk Facilities.

Who does the smoke-free area apply to?

This applies to all who are present in this smoke-free area: students, employees, visitors and suppliers.

What is considered smoking? Smoking refers to the use of all types of tobacco products and also related products, such as e-sigarettes and vapes (with or without nicotine).
May I smoke outside of the smoke-free campus?

You may smoke beyond the limits of the smoke-free campus unless there is a non-smoking measure in place there as well (for example, a nearby school of business location). We request you adhere to smoking measures of other parties as well, and to smoke only there where others are least affected. We also ask you to remove your extinguished cigarette butts, to prevent environmental impact.

My car is privately owned. May I smoke inside my car?

Smoking is prohibited on the smoke-free campus. This includes the cars parked or driving on campus.

Is there a non-smoking rule for WUR-locations outside of Wageningen as well?

No, WUR-locations elsewhere are exempt, as there are no educational activities or facilities there.

May I smoke on campus outside of office hours, on weekends or during the holidays?

No. The non-smoking rule applies 24 hours per day, seven days a week, all year long.

I intent to quit smoking. Where can I get help?

For WUR-employees: please contact your manager should you encounter any difficulties. For WUR-students: please contact your study-advisor, student dean or student psychologist depending on the nature of the issue.

If you have suggestions or questions about the non-smoking policy then please contact the Servicedesk Facilities.

If I smoke on campus, what consequences do I face?

If you smoke within the smoke-free zone on campus you may be approached by an enforcement authority of a colleague. Moreover, WUR can be fined if smoking does occur on campus. And that would be a waste; we'd rather spend that money on research and education.

I see people smoking on campus, how should I respond?

You may approach the smokers and inform them that smoking is no longer permitted on the WUR-section of Wageningen Campus from 1 July 2020. You may also reach out to the Servicedesk Facilities, or the location manager of the building if the smoker is violating the rules within or in the direct vicinity of a building.

Who can I contact with questions, suggestions and complaints?

Please contact the Servicedesk Facilities if you have any questions, suggestions and/or complaints.
