Programme Committees (PC)

The primary task of a PC is to advise on enhancing and assuring the quality of its accompanying bachelor and/or master programme(s) at Wageningen University. This advice is given to the Board of Education (BoE) or Programme Director (PD). The BoE is the single board for all degree programmes at the university, established by the Executive Board. PC members are appointed by the BoE.

Each PC consists of 6, 8 or 10 members, half staff members and half students. The term for members is two years and they can be reappointed twice. Most PC’s have an agenda committee consisting of one student member, one staff member and the programme director. The regulations may be different for the joint degrees.

Role of the PC

The core task of the PC is laid down in the Higher Education and Scientific Research Act (WHW). More specifically, this Act lists the following tasks of the PC:

  • Regarding the Education and Examination Regulations (EER):
    • Exercise right of consent with regard to parts of the EER
    • Exercise right to advise with regard to other parts of the EER
    • Annually assess how the EER is implemented
  • Offer solicited or unsolicited advice or put forward proposals to the BoE, the programme director and the Executive Board ‘on all matters relating to education in the relevant degree programme’.

In addition, the University's Management and Administration Regulations (BBR) list the following duties:

  • Advise on the vision for the degree programme(s);
  • Putting forward proposals to the BoE concerning the design of degree programmes, including proposals regarding the competencies to be developed, the development of the programme(s) according to the wishes of the students and the professional field, and the consequences that this has for the structure of the programme(s);
  • Assessing the quality of education provided (including the assessment) and advising the BoE and the programme director in this regard.

The purpose of the PC is therefore to promote and safeguard the quality of the degree programme(s). This means that anything related to the quality of the degree programme(s) should be open to discussion within the PC and with its dialogue partners. In this context, the opinions of student members and staff members carry equal weight.
