Your Erasmus+ grant consists of:

  1. A base amount per month, depending on your destination and whether or not you are a student with 'fewer opportunities'.
  2. Travel support that is determined based on the distance (in a straight line) between your Wageningen University campus and your receiving institution; and whether or not you travel sustainably (green travel).

Erasmus+ fewer opportunities top-up

The Erasmus+ programme commits to ensuring equal access and opportunities to participants from all backgrounds. This is why eligible students can apply for the Erasmus+ fewer opportunities top-up, which, if approved, results in an additional grant amount of EUR 250 per month.

The Erasmus+ fewer opportunities top-up is available for students going abroad to one of the Erasmus+ programme countries (all EU countries plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Türkiye) and, in academic year 2025-2026, the United Kingdom.

1. Fewer opportunities top-up categories

Top-up for economic reasons

As an Erasmus+ exchange student, you are eligible to receive a top-up for economic reasons if:

  • You (have) receive(d) the "aanvullende beurs" from DUO. You will have to provide an official letter from DUO proving that you (have) receive(d) the "aanvullende beurs". This letter is valid as proof up until two years after finishing your studies. For example, if you received the “aanvullende beurs” during your bachelor, you can still apply for the top-up during your master, but only up until two years after finishing your bachelor. NB A screenshot is not valid.
  • If you are an international student, please fill in the DUO Calculation Tool to check if you would be eligible to receive a supplementary DUO grant and, as such, are eligible to receive a top-up. When filling in the calculation tool, pretend that your parents have an income in the Netherlands. Additionally, please fill in and sign the Declaration of honour.
Top-up for studying with a disability or for medical reasons

As an Erasmus+ exchange student, you are eligible to receive a top-up for studying with a disability or for medical reasons if:

  • You have an adjustment or provision registered in Osiris Cases, based on a medical statement. When applying for the top-up, you will be asked to give the Exchange Office permission to confirm your eligibility with the Student Deans. If there is no Osiris Case yet, contact the Student Deans to start the process and inform the Exchange Office about this.

2. How to apply for the top-up

You can apply for the fewer opportunities top-up as part of your Erasmus+ grant application (see the article here for more information) in Osiris Student. You will be asked to upload your DUO letter/Declaration of Honour/to give permission to contact the Student Deans (see above).

3. Top-up approved?

If the top-up is approved, you will receive an additional grant amount of EUR 250 per month. This will be indicated on your Grant Agreement. The top-up amount will be included in your total grant amount, and will be paid in two separate payments (70% before the start of your exchange, 30% after you have returned to the Netherlands).

B. Travel support

When you apply for an Erasmus+ grant for your exchange, this will automatically include a fixed amount of (green) travel support. The amount is based on the travel distance between Wageningen University and your receiving institution. Please use the European Commission's distance calculator to calculate what amount of (green) travel support you will receive. Other sources are not accepted. If travelling sustainably both to and from your exchange destination, remember that you will have to provide proof of your travels in order to receive the higher green travel support amount. Please see below for more information about green travel support.

Erasmus+ green travel support

The Erasmus+ programme provides green travel support to encourage sustainable travel. If you use environmentally friendly means of transport, both to and from your receiving institution, you will receive a higher amount of travel support. Additionally, you will receive two extra days of grant to cover your travel days.

How to apply for green travel support

When filling in your Erasmus+ grant application in Osiris Student, you are asked to indicate the way you are planning to travel to and from your exchange destination. If selecting one of the green travel options, you will need to confirm that you are planning to travel green by checking the box "I declare on my honour that I will travel sustainably to and from my host institution as part of my planned Erasmus+ exchange".

When you have returned from your exchange, you will be able to upload proof of your travels as part of the upon return process. You will need to upload your train or bus tickets (both ways!). In case of carpooling, you can provide proof by uploading a document that includes the name(s) of the student(s) you travelled with, and gas receipts for both directions of your journey. Note that you will only receive green travel support if you travelled green both ways.

The green travel support will be included in the total grant amount on your Grant Agreement. You will receive 70% of the amount at the start, and the remaining 30% at the end of your exchange. Note that if you ended up not travelling green, we will recalculate your travel support.

Green travel tip: Interrail Pass for Erasmus+ participants

An easy way to travel green is by using the Interrail Pass that's exclusively available for Erasmus+ participants. The Interrail Global Pass for Erasmus+ enables you to travel through Europe by train for 4 or 6 days within a 6-month period. It's therefore a great opportunity to travel sustainably to and from your exchange destination, and to explore beautiful places along the way.
