Wageningen University has agreements with universities all over the world. In total, WU has around 190 exchange partners, with more than 1,000 exchange spots available. By using this network, you do not have to pay tuition fees to the university abroad. Instead, you remain enrolled as a WU student and pay your annual tuition fees here.

The courses you take at the other university can be included in your study programme; so it is possible to do a study exchange without delaying your studies, if you use the courses you take abroad to fill up your free electives Minor in your Bachelor*. You can also go abroad during your Master's programme. In that case, you will probably have to take into account some study delay.

The number of students we can send to our partner universities varies depending on the agreement. That is why we have a selection procedure to allocate the available places to students who want to study abroad.

Step-by-step plan

1. Orientation

First, check whether you meet the conditions for applying (see Requirements for study exchange). Then you can start exploring the possibilities and see which universities we have agreements with. Please note that with many universities, we have specific agreements regarding the faculty or department where students are allowed to take courses. This means that in many cases you are limited to selecting courses at a specific faculty or department, and cannot freely select courses from across the entire university. You can find information about this in our list of bilateral agreements, which you can download from our Partner universities page.

2. Elaboration

Make a shortlist of the universities that interest you. Check which courses (in English) are available at those universities, and whether they are suitable for your free electives (in terms of content and level). Keep in mind that you will need to comply with the prerequisites of the course you choose, and that some courses may be offered only during a certain period (for instance, only in Fall or only in Spring). There's no guarantee that courses will be available to you during the time of the exchange. Therefore, it is wise to investigate if a university offers enough suitable courses for you. Your study adviser can counsel you on the level and content requirements for elective courses.

3. Apply for study exchange

Every year in February, we hold a selection round for study exchanges in the following academic year, for both the first and second semesters. To participate, students must register via Osiris between the beginning of December and 31 January. After the selection round, we publish a list of exchange places that are still available. These will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. You can find more information in the article Apply for study exchange.
