In the Netherlands, your general practitioner, or 'huisarts' in Dutch, is always your first point of contact for all medical matters. They play a key role in the healthcare system, treating basic non-surgical problems and providing advice on general health issues.
They are also your link to other services, such as hospitalisation, specialists and midwifery. If necessary, your GP can refer you to a medical specialist at short notice. They keep your medical records up to date and prescribe your medication.
How to find a General Practitioner in Wageningen?
Once you arrive in the Netherlands, you should register with a GP in your place of residence. You can choose your own GP. However, a practice may already be full or only accept new patients who live in its postal area.
The Student Medical Centre Wageningen, which is not part of Wageningen University, accepts new patients, including students, and has experience with student-related issues.

Dentist
If you’re staying in the Netherlands for a longer period, it’s a good idea to register with a local dentist (tandarts). Wageningen has several dental practices you can choose from. Insurance tip: Dental care is not always included in standard health insurance, so check with your provider. If you’re insured with AON, you can find details on their website.
